Tigers in Sariska: History, Conservation Efforts, & Wildlife Revival

Sariska, nestled in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, was once a royal hunting ground for the Maharajas of Alwar. The rich biodiversity and thriving tiger population made it a favoured destination for hunting expeditions. Recognising the need for wildlife protection, Sariska was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and later designated a tiger reserve in 1978 under Project Tiger, a national initiative to protect the dwindling population of tigers in India. Despite these conservation efforts, a shocking revelation emerged in 2004—Sariska had lost all of its tigers due to rampant poaching and mismanagement. This critical situation demanded immediate intervention, sparking one of the world's most extensive tiger relocation initiatives.

Tiger Reintroduction & Conservation Efforts

In 2008, Sariska Tiger Reserve achieved a global first by successfully relocating tigers to their habitat. The initiative began by translocating tigers from Ranthambore National Park, ensuring genetic diversity and repopulation. This groundbreaking project marked a significant milestone in India’s conservation history. Thanks to stringent protection measures, as of June 11, 2024, the tiger population in Sariska has grown to 43 tigers, comprising 11 males, 14 females, and 18 cubs. Conservation efforts continue with advanced monitoring techniques, including radio collars and camera traps, which help track tiger movements and prevent poaching threats. Increased patrolling and stringent forest regulations have significantly contributed to the revival of Sariska's tiger population.

Best Time & Zones for Tiger Sightings

For wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, the best time to spot tigers in Sariska is during the summer months (March to June) when the tigers frequent water bodies to quench their thirst. The dry landscape enhances visibility, making it easier to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Sariska Tiger Reserve is divided into several safari zones, with the most promising tiger sighting areas being the Sariska and Tehla zones. These regions have a high density of tigers and diverse landscapes, providing ample opportunities for thrilling wildlife encounters.

Safari & Visitor Guidelines

To enhance visitor experiences while ensuring the safety of wildlife, the Sariska Tiger Reserve follows regulated safari timings, which vary according to the season. Due to the limited number of safari slots, booking is strongly advised. Visitors can explore the reserve via jeep or canter safaris, accompanied by knowledgeable guides and naturalists who offer detailed information about the park's diverse plant and animal life. Tourists are also encouraged to follow strict wildlife-friendly guidelines, such as maintaining silence, refraining from littering and respecting the park’s ecosystem.

  • Morning Safari: 6:30 AM – 10:00 AM (Timings may vary seasonally)
  • Afternoon Safari: 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM (Timings may vary seasonally)
